FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do you take commissions?
Yes! The majority of our work is commissioned based. We love working with our clients one on one to create a completely customized piece for their homes and specific spaces. Please feel free to fill out a custom inquiry form here, or email us directly at sunwoven@gmail.com.
How does the custom process work?
Typically with custom work we start by narrowing down what style of piece the client is looking for. Most times they will send over links from our site, or photos from Instagram of pieces that have resonated with them. Once we narrow down what style you are looking for, we move onto discussing size and colors. Pricing is mostly determined by the size & style of the piece. We are happy to work within budgets or size restrictions that any of our clients have.
Where do you source your materials?
A lot of materials are sourced from Etsy and various online shops. There is a wonderful local yarn shop a few miles from my parent’s home in Missouri that I love to visit twice a year to stock up on fibers. There are so many wonderful small shops online that carry beautiful fibers as well!
What type of materials do you use in your woven pieces?
We use a lot of 100% unspun wool called roving. This is the fluffy material that you see used consistently throughout our work. This comes in a variety of colors and we source it from two different suppliers that we love. We also use mostly 100% cotton for all of our overlay tasseling, and a wool blended yarn for the base and base tassels of our pieces. We love to incorporate new & interesting materials from time to time, but the materials mentioned above are our tried and true favorites.
Where did you learn to weave?
In 2014, I came across an online tutorial for tapestry weaving on the blog A Beautiful Mess. I was instantly drawn to the idea of working with yarn and color in a way I had never tried before. I quickly ordered my first loom and began weaving immediately and never stopped. Weaving is so therapeutic and the design options are endless. I am forever thankful that I found a craft that speaks so much to me and allows for me to express myself in a creative way every day.
I would love to learn to weave! Do you sell kits?
Yes! We sell a wonderful kit & tutorial combo that is perfect for beginner weavers. Read more about our kits here.
How long does it take to make a piece?
Each piece is handwoven by Erin & Abby in Erin’s Charleston, SC home studio and takes many hours, sometimes weeks to complete, hang and prepare to ship. For custom work, lead time starts at 2 weeks and can go up to 8 weeks. You will be informed on your expected lead time when you inquire about a custom piece. For made to order work, approximate lead times are listed under each description.
Do you offer classes?
Yes! We started offering in person and online classes in 2023! Sign up for our mailing list to be notified of class dates. We also offer a wonderful kit that comes with everything that you need to create your own handwoven piece from start to finish. See the shop for more details.
